Car information

This Packard has an interesting story. It was purchased new by ‘Dowling Motors’ in Swan Hill and was Mrs Dowling’s private car. When the Second World War broke out, the Military confiscated the Dowling Motors Tow Truck for the war effort. As it was a large business, they needed a Tow-Truck and it had to be 8 cylinders. The family had no choice but to cut down Mrs Dowling’s beautiful Packard Sedan to make a Tow-Truck. My father Alan McKenzie bought this car after the war and he built a wooden tray back for it, and we used it as a family car until he bought the 1939 Super 8. He used it for years on the farm driving between rows of fruit trees and grape vines when it was harvest time. He would then take the load of boxed fruit to Swan Hill in the truck.
